Pollen In The Spring

18 Apr

Spring Flowers And An Apple Tree

This time of year is one of my favorites for photos.  The fields of yellow flowers, and the apple trees with all of their blossoms are just amazing.  The only thing I could do without is all of the pollen and the allergies that go with it.

Everything just seems to be coated in a layer of green.  My nose is raw from all the Kleenex and even my allergy medication doesn’t seem to be working as well this week.  Just around the time I start to get a sore throat from all of the allergies I know that I only need to survive one or two more weeks before the pollen is gone.

What I really need is a good rain to clean everything up.  That would be wonderful right about now.

Spring is On Its Way and Biking is Underway

28 Mar

This weekend I met a friend to go on a mountain bike ride.  Riding with the Swiss can be a challenge.  They seem to have superhuman biking stamina.  I am not sure where that comes from.  I made the trip up a few local hills and through some valleys and was dead tired after the 2 hour ride.  The one nice part of any ride with a good Swiss is that is always ends a local farm house restaurant with a stop for a proper post ride beer or panache depending on what time it is.

So far despite my loads of traveling lately I have managed to get in longer rides in each of the last two weekends.  I am feeling pretty good about that.  Hopefully I can keep it up for the next couple of weeks.

This weekend we spent some time on top of Rotberg, a local hill that has a kiddie ski hill in the winter.

Spring Has Arrived in Baden

10 Apr

Spring has arrived in Baden.  It is clearly evident.  Not because of the new buds on the trees, or the tulips starting to peak out of the damp earth after a long winters rest. No, the real sign of spring are the cries of the Latin American flute band under our balcony.

With the warm weather comes the music.  I think today I have heard their standard 45 minute set about 4 times already.  It is to the point where I feel like I could grab a drum stick and a tambourine and join in.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy the music, I do.  It’s just that they play the same 6 songs all day long and that starts to drive ya nuts after some time.  Id did take a kurze pause from the music and get out in the town for a while this afternoon.

What are your signs of spring?

Warwick Castle Visit

29 Mar
Warwick Castle Grounds

Warwick Castle Courtyard Grounds

One stop on our weekend tour in England was the Warwick castle.  It was listed has one of the 1000 places to see before you die, so we dicided it might make a good stop.  The morning of our visit we talked to the owner of the Bed & Breakfast we were staying at and it made a comment that he hadn’t been there since he was a kid, but he had thought the ‘Americans’ had bought it.

At that statement I had visions of Disneyland,  people in ridiculous costumes marching around playing in character.

In reality I wasn’t too far off.  Upon entering the Castle we were greeted by a fair madien who asked us if we had planned our day.  She offered a few pieces of advice on things to see, and suggest that the Princess Tower would probably not be our cup of tea.

The castle is a bit over the top at times.  In the central courtyard as an example there is a single track of trumpet fan fair that plays all day on continous loop.  Luckily, I only past through a few times.  I was getting tired of it at the end, so I must imagine in drives the employees insane.

We also attended the ‘Dungeon’ which was a couple of extra pounds. It was essentially a show with live actors that gave an entertaining look at torture while taking you through one section of the castle.  It was entertaining, but would not be appropriate for small children.

We also saw the falconer show, and the shooting of the trebuchet.  There was plenty to do for both adults and kids and the castle itself was remarkable well maintained.  It was worth a visit since were were in the area, but if you are looking for really historical sites it does have a bit of a Disney flair to it.

While we were there I also took a nice panoramic photograph of the Warwick castle courtyard.
