Steps on a castle wall in Portugal

Castle Wall

Last night I was going through more of my photographs.  I like the composition of this one.  It has a nice feel to it.  I might have to spend a bit more time with it to get the colors where I like them but I think it is a good start.

I’d also like to clone out the black light housing on the side of the wall at the bottom of the stairs.  But for that I’ll need to go into Photoshop and I just don’t feel like that right now.

This was one of what felt like a 100 castles we visited on our trip to Portugal.

For those with an interest this was a 3 image series shot at 1 & 2/3 stop intervals processed as an HDR image.  Shots were handheld.

My He Has An Enormous Tripod

Window in Sintra Portugal

Window in Sintra Portugal

Sometime my wife has a better eye for great photo opportunities than I do.  She always says my pictures must turn out better because I have a ‘big fancy camera’  but I don’t think that is true.  I think that 80% of a photograph is in the photographers ability to visualize and frame a good shot, the remaining 20% can be attributed to technical knowledge or the ‘quality’ of a camera.

This window is a good example,  she spotted it, not me.  I have to thank her because the photographs came out really nice.

That leads to a great line my wife over-heard in a resturant we ate in while traveling.  At the time we had just finished up our normal 1 hour  magic hour photography session.  The best time to shoot is often times 5 minutes before and 5 minutes after sunset.  Anyway, we had finished and walked in a nice resturant.  I had a normal 10 kilos of camera gear and a tripod strapped to my back.

As I weaved through the tables a woman with a obiously british accent burted out loudly to her elderly dinner partner, “My he has an erormous tripod, he must be a serious photographer.”

The funny part is I didn’t hear it at the time, my wife had to retell the tale after she stopped laughing.  I have a feeling this is going to become some sort of running joke around here.

And to confess I do have an enormus tripod.  Its a Bogen 3021 with a 3030 pan and tilt head to be exact. But on that day I was carring my much much smaller Manfrotto 190XCPROB with NN5 and RD16 rotator.

Somehow, sometimes I feel like I get a bit carried away with this stuff.

Bussaco Palace Hotel, Portugal

Bussaco Palace Hotel, Portugal

Bussaco Palace Hotel, Portugal

During our trip to Portugal we spent one evening in the Bussaco Palace hotel in the center of Portugal.  This little bit of extravegance is located in a remote area of the country so I have a feeling it is not on most American’s must see list.  In reality it probably should be, just because it is one really cool hotel to stay at.

In the off season it is also a steal (relatively speaking) for the price.

It is difficult to explain the extravagance of this place.   So, maybe a picture is better.

Late in evening, and I should say American late, not Portugues late, I went into the lobby with my full camera kit and captured a really great 360 panorama photograph of the Bussaco Palace Hotel Lobby.  I was in the lobby for about 20 to 30 minutes and I didn’t see a soul while I was shooting.  I am sure I was only so lucky first because it was off season, and second maybe some would be guest got caught up in the volcano problems.

The restaurant in the hotel is in a really ornate room.  Keep in mind that if the 35-40 Euro per person dinner is a little steep for your budget you’ll get you breakfast in the same room in the morning.  Being cheap as we generally are we opted to go for a glass of wine with club sandwiches in the bar.  We ended up getting out with only about 22 euros of damage between the two of us, which was still expensive, but much more reasonable.

Urlaub is Over, Back To Work

Tourisim fffice in Portugal

Tourism office in Portugal

I have taken a bit of a break from posting the last week in part because of a vacation.  I typically enjoy hitting the road and seeing the sites outside of normal ‘tourist’ season.

Going at low times gives me better access to great photography locations, with less people.    Not to mention the fact that hotel rooms and flights are usually a bit cheaper so you get more bang for your buck.  The one thing that can be a bit of a bear is that not all of the tourist attractions or locations are open.

This time around we took a week to explore Portugal.  We couldn’t have timed it better.  We left a day before all of the airport closings in Europe due to the volcano in Iceland and just returned today.  Somehow we were totally unaffected.  What a treat, although, I guess I wouldn’t have minded if it was forced to take an extra day or two of vacation if i was forced to.

As always there are plenty of pictures, but right now I am focusing on getting them over to my computer.  I’m sure I’ll share some photographs later this week.
