Gearing Up For The First Of August

30 Jul

Baden is getting ready for the upcoming first of August holiday.  The flags went up on the tower across the street early Saturday morning.

I’m getting ready as well.  Stocking up on chips and beer for our annual party.  This year will be the first year I’ll be trying one of the self-cooling beer kegs.  No ice needed. Thank God for that because it is just too difficult and costly to get ice here.

From the guest list and the number of RSVP’s we’ve gotten this year I expect a good turn out.  I’ll of course pull out the Alphorn for a a couple of songs as well.

Every year we always tell our guests that if they would like to bring something, they should bring something that represents their cultural background.  In the past we have had cup cakes, nusstollen, German Beer, taco dip, Capriana’s.  Lets see what comes this year.  It is always a great surprise.

Badener Fasnacht: Day 4

06 Mar

Stage in Baden's Cordulaplatz

The massive Baden Fasnacht festival continued into the early morning hours today.  I was so tired from walking around all day with my camera gear that I managed to sleep through it.  I think it was a little different for my wife last night.

The battle continues to see who has the best costumes and music.  The strange thing is I always wonder how they judge the best music.  Is it loudness, outdatedness of the selected pieces or what.  A lot of the music seems to be classic hits from the 80′s or early 90′s.  Somehow that must seem appropriate for brass and drum bands.

To give a little more flavor of the sounds of the festival below I’ve included a short video taken late in the evening. There is a constant stream of people walking around banging on drums and it can really get on your nerves after a day or two. I can feel that I am reaching my limit. Thank God this will all be over soon.

Badener Fasnacht: Day 3

05 Mar

Day Time Celebration

Moving into day 3 now.  Saturday is always the first day when the celebration starts early and goes late.  The music outside of our apartment started around 10:30 this morning and I suspect it will go all night.  By all night I mean until about 6 in the morning.  I am just taking a break after a couple of hours of photography and then I’ll head back out and get a beer and ‘enjoy’ more of the music.

Badener Fasnacht: Day 2

04 Mar

Badenerfasnacht 2011

Fasnacht and sleepless nights continue.  As always you might was well join them because they aren’t going a way.  I really liked one groups set of costumes this year that were decorated in the motif of canton (state) flag.  Three stars, three strips, and black and blue. I can’t imagine someone dressing up like a state flag in the U.S. but here it seems to be acceptable.

I had several people ask me if I was a photographer for the local paper.   I guess the colored flashes and camera gear gave them the idea.

I am finding I don’t mind getting a little extra attention with the camera gear because some of the people that are dressed up are more likely to pose for you.

Fasnacht Begins

03 Mar

Baden Fasnacht 2011

Today marks the start of fasnacht in Baden.  That means we’ll have a week of drum banging and loud trumpets outside our apartment until next Tuesday evening.  I decided to join in the fun today while the celebration as still fresh and wasn’t wearing on me yet.  I know by Sunday or Monday I’ll be ready for it to be over.

I took the opportunity to play with a few birthday gifts as well while I was out.  I just got a few colored flash gels for my flash guns.  I was using a red and green filter for the image above.  One guy approached me and asked if I was shooting 3D.  I thought that was a funny, but good question I suppose.  I’m sure I looked a little strange out there with my gear.

Hot Air Balloon Over The Alps

13 Feb

Balloon Over Chateau D’Oex Switzerland

Today I spent some time going through some more photos from our trip to the Chateau D’Oex balloon festival.  I liked this balloon a lot.  I guess it is a bit stereotypical in its style compared to some of the more elaborate balloons we saw.  But sometimes I think simple is good.

Happy August First

01 Aug

Traditional Swiss Flag Throwing

Today is the Swiss National Holiday.  With the First of August celebration comes our annual First of August Party.  My wife and I have been cleaning all day to get the apartment and balcony in shape for the big party.

As usually the fireworks still start across the street over the castle at 10:00 pm.   Every year we add one new element to the party.  This will be the 5th year we have had the party.  Last year we invited all of our guests to bring a food or drink that was representative of their home culture.  That turned out to be a really good way to get people taking and trying different things.

This year in addition to the cultural pot luck I of course will be playing a short Alphorn piece or two.   I’m looking forward to it.  Now, just to get in some rest before the guests arrive.

Trachtenfest 2010

08 Jun

Swiss Man in Traditional Clothing

Somewhat by happen stance we fell upon the Swiss trachtenfest this weekend. This rare festival occurs only once every 12 years so we were really lucky to have made a last minute decision to go.

Mens traditional clothing from Bern

The festival is a celebration of traditional folk clothing.  If you are a really expert I am told that you can tell the exact Canton that a person comes from based on their outfit.  Remember there are 26 Cantons in Switzerland, so that is a lot of costumes.  Women also have two sets of clothing.  A more traditional Arbeitstrachten (Working dress) and a Sonntagstrachten (Sunday Best).

The amazing thing was the fact that all this people were walking around in these heavy outfits, wool, felt, velet etc. and it was hotter than blazes out.  I don’t know how the did it.  Thank God my allergies were kicking in and I couldn’t smell anything.

From an aesthetic side, I think my favorite mens trachten was from Bern.  They have a  traditional black jacket with red and white trim.  Finished with a few edelweiss flowers on the lapel that really scream Schweiz to me.

The womens clothing is something else to see as well.  A Swiss friend of mine from Bern was telling me how she despised the womens hats from Valis.  They look more like buckets than hats if you ask me but who am I to judge.

I didn’t find out where the women with the ‘rooster’ hats were from, but I definately liked the look.

Unusual Traditional Womens Clothing

I really didn’t have a chance to line up a good photo of this woman in a blue dress.  But she caught my eye as she was running across the street.

at points various jodeling clubs would seem to form randomly like dustballs on street corns and sing a couple of ‘classics’ before they would strangely disperse back in the crowds of people.

Monday morning when I was back in the office a Swiss colleague came up to me and said she was watching SF2 over the weekend and saw the trachtenfest on TV.  Somehow she just knew I would be there.  And, of course she was right.

Easter Weekend Is Here

01 Apr

Thank God for Easter.  The joy of working in Europe is that many countries here observe Catholic holidays as days off from work.  Easter is no exception.

For the Easter weekend in Switzerland we get both Good Friday and Easter Monday off.  That means I get a much needed break from the grind.

The break comes at a great time.  I was just starting to feel the stress levels rise a bit this week.  I’m sure a the long weekend will give me a chance to rest and relax.  I am looking forward to reading a book or two and of course getting out with my camera.

I was out with some friends last night, it was a sort of going away party.  A friend of ours is headed back to the U.S. today after a little over a year and a bit in Switzerland.  He was a Goolger and is returning to their mountain view office after a short term assignment here.

We were talking about a mutal friend that works at ETH, and is also into photography.  He is actually doing some post doc studies there on rendering light through participate matter (Fog).  It ends up the guys that did Avatar read some of his research and put it to use in one of the scenes in the movie.  I thought that was really cool.  I’ll have to congratulate him next time I see him.   Some how I kinda feel like the guy, that knew the neighbor of the guy that cut the grass for Andy Griffith.

Flaming Street Parade: Liestal

23 Feb

Crowd Cringes in Pain From The Searing Heat

I need to do a follow up on the early post about the crazy fire parade I went too, because it was just so strange. I haven’t had time to go through all of the 5 gigs of photos yet, but as I am going through them I am finding more and more. I like the one above that focuses on one of the mobile 6 foot high (2 M) mobile bon fires on a cart. In the background you can see one of the Firefighters, in protective gear turning his back on the fire because it is so hot.

Just imagine for a second how hot this must be if the firefighter is turning his back in all that protective gear and that sad guy next to him is just standing there in a nylon ski jacket. If you look into the crowd all you see is backs of head, because if you face these carts of fire your face starts to burn. It is just absolutely crazy.

Although it isn’t clear in the picture the crowd is probably less than 6 feet from the flames.

Man Resting With Burning Broom

One of the other traditions is something that looks like a huge burning broom. It is essentially a pile of logs strapped to a stick. The guys will lift these flaming torches and carry them over their shoulder like a hobo sack. All the while, burning embers and pieces of wood falling on their heads. Many of the men will cover there heads in wet towels or wet hats. Another popular accessory was a metal colander worn upside down on the head as a helmet.

Did I forget to mention that the entire street is also covered in about an eighth of an inch (.5 cm) of paper confetti? It was just amazing to me that the entire town didn’t just burst into flames.
