First Christmas Away From Hom

New Years 5km Candle Lit Nordic Walking Event

Christmas this year was a totally new experience for me and my family this year.  It marked the first year in my life that I spent the holiday away from home.  Since our little baby was so small this year we made the difficult decision to stay in Switzerland.  We did have family join us in Switzerland for the holiday so we weren’t alone, but it was very different.  Some old traditions were put aside.  Others we tried to replicate here as best we could in this new setting.

I don’t think having Christmas outside of the U.S. will be a permanent change, it feels like only a temporary arrangement.

Due to the fact that were were here we did get to do some local things that we wouldn’t normally have a chance to do. We bought our Christmas tree in the plaza under our apartment as opposed to the Jumbo home improvement store.  Usually we don’t have that option because the vendors start selling trees in the city a little late for out tastes.  We did get to keep one long standing tradition which was eating fondue on Christmas Eve.  And I have to say I think it was better in Switzerland for obvious reasons.

We also participated in the new years nordic walking evening on Baldegg.  The event was a 5km candle lit trail followed by a pasta dinner.  Most of the hike was in the pitch black forest with the trail lit by some 1000 candles according to my calculations.  It took a good 15 minutes to get used to walking in the complete darkness as the candles just didn’t have the power needed to illuminate much of the trail at all.  My sister-in-law described it like stumbling 5km for the bathroom in the middle of the night.  A perfect description.

Our family will be here for another 2 weeks or so.  That is beautiful in a sense that we will have 3 extra babysitters around, and that they will have a chance to spend so much time with the newest member of the family.

Putting Away The Christmas Tree

The brown Christmas Tree

Old Dry Christmas Tree

The time has come to get rid of the Christmas tree.  Yes it is April, and like every year we missed the tree pick up because we were in the U.S. in January when the city picks trees up, so I has sat like a discarded dirty sock on the corner of our balcony for the past 3 months.

Although it was sunny and inviting looking outside it was still a bit cold.  But with the look of spring in the air and the tulips just beginning to come out I thought it was time to tidy up the garden.

My usual dismantling of the tree with the saw went fast this year.  The past 3 years of experience have made me an expert in tree dissection.  I can reduce an entire Christmas tree into a 110 liter garbage bag in about 30 minutes.

Along with the tree trimming I also dusted off the outdoor furniture in preparation for the warmer weather.  I just can’t wait until its warm enough to actually sit outside.

How is you spring cleaning going?

Christmas Tree Is Up

30 Nov

This weekend we got the tree up. As we always do, we put it up a bit early so we can enjoy it before we make holiday trips home. We got a tree as always at the jumbo, this being the smoothest bus ride home yet. I finally have a good process down for getting the tree home on the bus. Pick it up at the jumbo, strap it to my pull shopping cart, and drag it home.

I was a bit worried about not having enough lights since the little Italian Christmas lights are so expensive. As I approached the bottom half of the tree I was dreading I would run out. At 20 USD for 100 lights it is quite a shock to have to pay so much. My wife pulled the unused set of lights out of the Christmas decoration box all the while telling me not to worry, we had plenty of lights. To my surprise I had invested the 20 bucks last year in a set of lights that I never even opened.

I know we put our tree up early, but its after Thanksgiving so I somehow feel justified in having it up.
