Art Nouveau Architecture Of Ljubljana, Slovenia

Union Hotel Ljubljana

Union Hotel, Ljubljana

In 1895 a large earthquake in Ljubljana flattened large parts of the city.  The timing of the quake was perfectly aligned for incoming architects to build excellent examples of Art Nouveau style buildings that were popular in many western European cities at the time.

Examples of Art Nouveau can also be found in throughout Vienna, Austria as well.

One of my favorite aspects of the Art Nouveau style is the ornate stone and plaster work on the outside facades of the buildings.  There is something about the mixture of the very geometric straight lines and the curving scrolls and organic forms taken from nature that make the style pleasing to my eye.

While we were walking through Ljublana I spotted the Union Hotel which was a great example of the style.  It is just a stones through from the main square in the center of town, just behind the church. Definately worth the short walk if you are in the area.

Architecture of Vienna – Art Nouveau

Jugenstil (similar to Art Nouveau) Building in Vienna

I really enjoy the lines in Art Nouveau architecture. There is something very pleasing about the smooth arching lines, and simplistic geometry. During our travels we’ve seen some good examples of the style, particularly in Prague.

It turns out that Vienna also had some great examples of the Jugenstil style (close relative to art nouveau ) architectural style. In particular there was a man named Otto Wagner that did a lot of the work in Vienna.

Wagner did one particularly famous building in Karlsplatz, the city train station (Stadtbahn Station). The picture on the left is an architectural detail shot of some of the decorative metal work on the Stadtbahn Station building that caught my eye.

I think what I also like about the style is the subdued colors. Although they aren’t really that bright, it seems that the artists and architects always seem to incorporate a wide range of colors in their works that somehow seem to work well together.
