Too Many Teachers In This Country

29 Jan

I was out this weekend with my photo gear taking some photos in town and I have come to the conclusion there are just too many teachers in this town.  I don’t know if there is something in the water or what.  But everywhere I went this weekend some Swiss was trying to tell me how I should and should not do things.

The first encounter was near the train station where I was taking pictures of crowds of people going in and out of the station. A woman came by and told me that I should not be doing that because I was doing something not allowed, and then she mumbled something about security.  I kindly told her that I was in a public place, and as a photographer I can freely photograph the area.  She gave me some kind of evil eye like I was the devil and stormed off.  I was  half expecting security to find me but they never showed, and she probably in the end realized I knew what I was talking about.  After all if she was right, then every tourist in the country might was well not bring a camera because it would be useless.

My second encounter came this afternoon when I decided to walk down to the old town with my tripod and some gear to practice some flash photography.  The reason I went to thisspecific area was because the the beautiful cobblestone streets, and the relative lack of traffic.  In the past I have stood on the street for 2 hours and not seen a single moving vehicle.

Of course I get to the area and setup my tripod and not 5 minutes after getting things together an elderly woman walking a worn dog stops next to me to ask me how long I plan to stay.  At first I am a bit confused by the question.  Then she jumps into a lecture telling me that I should not be in the street with my tripod because there is alot of traffic. She is absolutely right,  all those 80+ sunday church goers taking over the old town on foot  on Sunday afternoon.  I also found it a bit ironic as here pace was not exactly speedy and she was not moving much faster than my tripod.  But back to her point, yes the people in the street were walking so fast they might not see a man in a red ski jacket standing next to a triopod in the middle of the road.  Politeness got the best of me of course, and I calmly responded that I will not be more than 5 minutes before moving on.

In all fairness, I was on the street for 45 minutes, and I did have to move once.  Only once, when the police came by in their van, probably looking for strange foreign men standing in the middle of the road with tripods.

Capturing Her First Moments

22 Jan

My daughter is now 3 months old.  During the first months I didn’t take as many photos of her as I would have thought. Things have finally settled down a bit, we have a routine, and I am finding some time for the things I used to do before the arrival of the little one.

While my daughter was in a good mood this morning I setup my lights in the living room for a portrait.  The challenge is of course getting a 3 month old to put a smile on her face long enough for Daddy to snap a picture all while looking in the direction of the camera.  It kind of feels like winning the lotto some how.

The trick of course is to introduce a stuffed animal.  My animal, in a small nod of the hat to the SVP is of course a black sheep.  I got my photograph, a beautiful smiling happy child holding a black sheep about half as big as her.  She may never be Swiss, but she will always be mine and that seems reason enough to love her with all my heart.

Winter Photos

20 Jan

Still going through some photographs from our trip to Oberwald in the first week of January.  I love fresh snow and small streams.  Put them together and you have the makings for really nice photographs.  Unfortunately it was still snowing when I crossed this stream.  This means it isn’t quite as sharp as I would like, but it still captures the moment.

Clouds Over Baden adn 64 bit Operating Systems

08 Dec

I haven’t had too much time for myself lately.  Or at least if feels that way since I haven’t had a lot of time to work on my photography.  I did finally get one small pet project of mine completed recently.  That being a rebuild of my computer and an upgrade to an 64 bit operating system.  Normally I am not one for lots of hardcore system reinstallation type work.  But I finally bit the bullet.  One of the prime motivators was the fact that I was trying to do some things in photoshop that my current operating system would just not handle.

So now I have a 64 bit operating system, and 64 bit versions of Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop running.  Now I’ll just need so see if I can get that extra 10% of improved performance out of the new setup.

As a first test run I processed a photo I took of the clock tower across the street this fall.  All my programs seem to be working well. It will be time to get back into the swing of things once I can get the little one down to sleep.

Photo Time

20 Sep

Life has gotten away from me lately.  I have had so much going on between home and work that I haven’t spent as much time on my hobbies as I like.  I don’t think I have really picked up a camera for a serious day of photography in a couple of months.  Tonight I was going through pictures from our vacation this year and found this little gem from the U.K.

At least this past weekend I got a bit of a kick start.  A friend from work just got his first DSLR and he asked for some tips.  We went out for a couple of hours last Saturday afternoon and talked a bit about what he wanted to improve.  Then we spent a bit of time working through a few ideas.  Hopefully it will do some good for his upcoming trip to the U.S.

Afterwards we took a short trip to the local mediamarkt where my friend reciprocated and we discussed and reviewed LCD TVs.  I’ve been looking for one for several weeks now but I just don’t know what to get.  Right now it is a toss up between Samsung and Sony.  The one problem I am trying to overcome is the large number of windows in our living room.  With all the large windows I have a concern that the high gloss Samsung screens will be too reflective to view comfortably.  The Sony TVs seem to have more of a matte finish.  If anyone reading has experience with either brand leave a comment.

Farm Near Baldegg

Summer is right around the corner, the weather is getting warm and the crops are growing.  This week I decided to start the long Easter weekend with a short bus ride up to Baldegg for an open air Alphorn practice session.

There is something totally different about playing the alphorn in a field on the top of some hill or mountain somewhere.  It just sounds different, and you get a really great echo if you pick the right spot.  For my practice session I choose to play in a farmer’s field that is about a 10 minute hike from the Baldegg restaurant.  I pass the farm all the time on my mountain bike trail.

I was riding past the other day around 7:30 in the evening with my wife and it was so beautiful in the light of the late evening sun with the yellow fields that I just had to go back with a camera.

Of course that is what I did.  A half an hour playing the horn, waiting for light to be just right, and then a short photo session.  I probably could have waited another 20 minutes, but for the first attempt I was happy.  And I got in some practice for an upcoming concert in June.

I’ve been invited to play an Alphorn duet at a private party in June with a friend of mine that lives in the area.  It should be a good time.  All as I continue on my journey to be the best American Alphorn player in Switzerland.   I am even going to be featured in an upcoming English language magazine article about my hobby.    Who would have thunk it.

Quiet Friday Night

Baden Police Office

A few weeks ago I brought in an old pile of photography magazines to work.  They had been collecting dust in my closet and since they were in English I thought someone at work might like them.  English literature and magazines are so expensive in Switzerland that many expats in the office freely trade books back and forth.

With all the technophiles I work with I was not surprised when the magazines were a bit of a hit.  It turns out one of my colleagues became very interested in HDR photography after reading one of the articles and we have been chatting about photography all week.

I give him a few pointers every day, he goes home tries it out, and then reports back on his successes and failures.  Sounds like he is making some progress towards improving his skills.

With all the talk about HDR photography it seemed like tonight would be a good night to get out with the camera and tripod to take a few photographs.  The police sign at the police station caught my eye this evening so I parked outside the police station for about 15 minutes until I got something I was happy with.  I like the outcome.  I was glad I was feeling a bit inspired tonight.

End Of The Year Photography Project

Assemblying This Years Photos

Every year around this time I start a project to assembly a collection of my best photographs and assemble them into a bound book.  The past couple of years I have been using the MPIX website site in the U.S. to get my books printed and I have been really happy with there products.

One feature I really like about MPIX press service is that they provide a small software package called the ‘ desktop solution’ that you can use on your desktop computer to create your photo book calendars, and some other fun things.  The application gives you much more control over many of the flash based photo book modules you will find built into websites like Snapfish.

While the software package is great, take note that currently MPIX will only ship to the U.S. and Canada.

But shipping is never my problem.  The really problem is sorting through the year’s photos and picking out the best.  This year I took over 13,000 photographs.  With such a huge collection it is really tough to select the ones I want to include in this years book.

Throughout the year I am a constant tagger of my photos, and I like to rate my photos in Adobe Lightroom.  That makes it much easier to find the best shots from that obscure little village I may have visited in some remote land.

So what are this years highlights from our continuing expat adventure.  Here is a short list

  • Snowshoeing in Amden, Switzerland
  • Trip to Portugal
  • The Cotswolds in England
  • Summer on Betteralp
  • Alphorn lessons
  • Nice and Manaco
  • Our trip to Innsbruck with friends

The book is put together and finalized now I just have to submit my order and I should have a nice keep-sake in a couple of weeks.  I can’t wait.
